On the 26th of June, a temperate afternoon saw the Council room of Makerere University at Frank Kalimuzo Central Teaching Facility host the launch of The Legacy. This initiative by the Makerere University Endowment Fund is published quarterly to majorly keep alumni and friends of Makerere in touch with their Alma mater.

The event was graced by the presence of the Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Board members of the Makerere University Endowment Fund, Principals of the different colleges, and various guests inclusive of the editorial team of The Legacy led by Dr. Sara Namusoga Kaale.

The launch started with initiation remarks from Mr. Emmanuel Kitamirike the Fund Administrator who doubled as the master of ceremonies for the event. He urged members that were present and not registered on the MaK Advance System to do so in order to be able to receive copies of The Legacy. He went ahead to invite Mr. Barnabas Tumusingize, the Vice Chairperson of the board of trustees who made his remarks. He mentioned that the concept of The Legacy came from the combined effort and devotion of the Board of Trustees who understood the need to engage alumni.

“It was born out of the recognition of the need for a powerful communication tool to connect with alumni across the globe’’ he said.
Tumusingize, who was representing Dr. Margaret Kigozi, the Chair of the Makerere University Endowment Fund added that at the heart of the Board’s strategic aspirations lies alumni engagement which is a cornerstone of the Endowment Fund mission.

Tumusingize further noted that Makerere’s alumni have made significant contributions to their respective fields and that The Legacy aims at showcasing these remarkable achievements for them to connect with their alma mater henceforth inspiring the current students thereat.
The head of the editorial committee Dr. Sara Namusoga Kaale shared that the vision of The Legacy is to shine a bright light on Makerere’s journey and that by reaching out to the alumni community, the hope is that they not only keep in touch but also give back through avenues like the Makerere University Endowment Fund.

Dr. Namusoga gave an insight into the content of The Legacy which are; innovations happening at Makerere, the alumni spotlight section, the In Memoriam section, and many more.
Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the Chief guest at the event started his speech by emphasising how pleasurable it was to welcome the readers to the inaugural edition of the quarterly e-newsletter appropriately named The Legacy.
He added that this initiative couldn’t have been more timely as Makerere just completed a year-long centenary celebration under the theme “Leveraging 100 years of Excellence in Building a Transformed Society”
He mentioned that Makerere’s Legacy is about her people, who are not only appreciative of the foundation the University laid for them but are equally desirous of perpetuating the institution’s legacy as a leadership trainer of quality human resources deployable globally.

The Legacy was officially launched when the Vice-chancellor sent an online copy of the Legacy to over 7000 alumni who are registered with the Mak Advance System. This was when he pressed the “send’’ icon on the smart screen before the audience.
