It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the inaugural edition of our quarterly e-newsletter, appropriately named The Legacy. The launch of this initiative could not have been more timely, as Makerere University in October 2022 completed year-long centenary celebrations themed “Leveraging 100 years of Excellence in Building a Transformed Society”. Throughout the centennial celebrations, we took stock of various milestones Makerere has recorded over the past 100 years, and recognized the selfless, and in some cases costly-to-the-point-of-death, contributions of distinguished men and women to our existence.

Indeed, Makerere is more than just our Main Campus and the off-campus prime properties we are privileged to own. It is all about the aforementioned men and women who oversaw the establishment and growth of this great institution. It is also about our hardworking professors and lecturers who nurture and mentor our students academically, our gallant alumni who have gone through the gates of Makerere, our selfless parents, our development partners, friends, and members of the public, whose respective contributions we sincerely appreciate.

Makerere University’s legacy is therefore all about her people. Our alumni alone, estimated to be over 400,000, are scattered all over the world as leaders in various fields. These are not only appreciative of the foundation that Makerere laid for them, but are equally desirous of perpetuating our legacy as a leading trainer of quality human resources deployable globally.

The Makerere University Endowment Fund (MakEF) is constantly refining mechanisms of tracking and engaging with alumni, The Legacy being one of them. In this inaugural edition, we are, therefore, proud to share profiles and success stories of alumni who are undertaking groundbreaking work and showcasing the impact of the Makerere on their careers. It is our hope that this section will inspire other alumni, particularly our latest graduates, to set their sights high.

The Class Notes section will consist of short biographies from our alumni from all over the world, and their personal and professional achievements. And whereas for this inaugural edition we will dedicate this section to our prolific performers over the previous graduation ceremonies, going forward, we invite our alumni to share these achievements with our Editorial Team. Additionally, the News and Updates section will be your window into our new programmes, research breakthroughs, university events, or other related news from the hill.

We are mindful that our alumni are keen to give back to their alma mater. The Alumni Engagement section will enable you and our readers to share any opportunities that your institutions or organizations might have, for the benefit of our student community. In the same spirit, the Fundraising Appeals section will highlight various causes of the MakEF that we invite you to generously contribute to.

By virtue of our reputation as a leading provider of higher education in the region, Professional Development is one area that we are keen to share with our readers. In this section, you will find various opportunities on how to continue your higher education or advance your careers. Lastly, our Souvenirs and Gifts section will showcase the latest stock of branded merchandise from Makerere, complete with details on how you can order them.

With these brief highlights, I once again welcome you to this inaugural edition of The Legacy and thank our editorial team for sparing time and great effort to compile this e-newsletter. I wish you a great reading experience as, together, We Build for the Future.
