Makerere University has once again made a significant mark on the African university sports scene. The institution returned with a commendable haul of nine medals from the 11th All Africa University Games (FASU 2024). The games took place from the 20th to 29th of September, 2024 and were co-hosted by the University of Lagos and Lagos State University in Nigeria. The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) is the governing body for university sports in Africa. Its mandate is to promote and develop sports in African universities.

Makerere University's medal haul was spearheaded by three spectacular athletes namely, Jacob Mugisha, Angel Lugya, and Margaret Nassiwa. Angel Lugya, a talented freshman from the College of Engineering, Art, and Technology (CEDAT), secured a gold medal in chess as she was the best performer on Board 5. Margaret Nassiwa, from the College of Computing and Information Sciences (COCIS), also added another gold medal to Makerere's tally with her impressive performance on Board 3 of the chess competition.

The ultimate star of the tournament was however, Jacob Mugisha, a final-year student at COCIS, who displayed a remarkable performance by clinching a total of seven medals in the swimming competitions. He won three silver and four bronze medals across various swimming events. The university’s overall performance, placed Makerere at the 17th position out of 22 participating universities in Africa.

Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe expressed his pride in the athletes’ achievements and emphasized the importance of investing in sports infrastructure and recognizing student athletes. He pledged to establish a system to reward and honor those who bring glory to Makerere University.
