The recent Makerere University 76th graduation ceremony that ran from Tuesday February 24th - Friday February 27th, 2026 was a PhD affair.
Over the course of four days, 9,200 students graduated at Freedom Square. Of these, 213 were doctoral candidates with 87 females and 126 males who, adorned in bespoke academic robes of red and green with specialized cylinders in hand, walked the red carpet one after the other, to present themselves to the Chancellor, Dr. Crispus Walter Kiyonga for the formal conferment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.)
This group of PhD graduates was admitted around 2021 - a COVID-19 constrained period, so the combined 213 college and school doctoral candidates is indeed outstanding.
Strategic shift
In the wake of a strategic shift towards a postgraduate-driven institution, Makerere University is scaling back on undergraduate intake to prioritize Masters and PhD uptake by 2030. Highlighting PhD programs is justified as a move in the right direction and is expected to boost the institution’s goal of becoming a research intensive hub, targeting 30% postgraduate enrollment to revamp national innovation, research output and specialized skills.
