About the Marathon

What is the Makerere University Marathon (MakRun)?

MakRun is an annual charity run organized by Makerere University through its Endowment Fund. It aims to raise funds for strategic causes, including the construction and equipping of the Disability Support Centre.

When is the next MakRun taking place?

Date: 17th August 2025
Location: Makerere University Freedom Square

What is the theme for this year's run?

This year's theme is: "Run the Hills for the Future"

Who can participate in MakRun?

The marathon is open to the general public -- students, staff, alumni, corporate partners, and friends of Makerere University, regardless of fitness level.

Registration and Participation

How do I register for the marathon?

You can register online via our official website here.

What is the registration fee?

Each participant pays UGX50,000 as a registration fee.

What do I get when I register?

Each registered participant receives a race kit that includes a branded T-shirt, race bib, bag and refreshments during and after the race.

Can I register on the day of the marathon?

No, you cannot register on the day of the marathon.

Race Details

What distances can I participate in?

We have multiple categories:

  • 3km Wheelchair Race
  • 5km Fun Run
  • 10km Challenge
  • 21km Half Marathon
  • 42km Full Marathon
What time does the marathon start?

The race will flag off at 6:00am but participants are advised to check in earlier for the warm up session.

Will the route be marked and supervised?

Yes, the route will be clearly marked, and security and marshals/first aid teams will be deployed throughout.

Are there prizes for winners?

Yes, there will be cash prizes for the top 3 runners in the Full and Half Marathon plus the top 2 winners in the 3km wheelchair race.

Will the race be chip-timed or manually timed?

The race will be chip-timed and results will be shared shortly after one finishes their race.

Safety and Logistics

Will there be medical support along the route?

Yes. There will be emergency medical stations and ambulances on standby.

Is there parking available at the venue?

Parking will be available on campus.

Can I bring my children?

Yes, you can bring your children around, provided they have equally registered and have their kits.

Charity and Fundraising

What cause does this marathon support?

A portion of the proceeds will go towards to the equipping of the Disability Support Unit at Makerere University, and the other portion will contribute to build a sustainable pool of funds to support Economically Disadvantaged Students over the long-term.

Can I donate without running?

Yes! You can support the cause by donating directly. Please contact us for donation information.

Miscellaneous

Will there be entertainment or refreshments at the finish line?

Yes. Expect music, refreshments, and a fun celebration atmosphere. A concert headlined by Azawi, Elijah Kitaka, Vinka and Navio has been organized after the marathon and will require an extra cost of UGX10,000.
